BLACK MMOUNTAIN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A Memorial Day ceremony honoring United States military personnel who died in service to the country will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26, at the Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
The city of Asheville will join the state of North Carolina, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veterans Council and Buncombe County in sponsoring the event.
This year’s keynote speaker is the Honorable Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette, secretary of the N.C. Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Mallette, a third-generation service member appointed by Gov. Josh Stein, is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. Her 10 years of active duty included work as a mission-critical intelligence officer and a prosecutor in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
The veteran writing group Brothers and Sisters Like These will also present selected readings during the ceremony.
The event is open to the public and honors members of the U.S. Armed Forces who died in the line of duty.
