ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Tropical Storm Imelda is expected to stay well south and east of Western North Carolina, but the system will still influence local weather conditions over the next few days, forecasters said Monday.
According to the National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg, a stalled frontal boundary will drift back over the region, bringing a return of showers and possible thunderstorms. High-level clouds associated with Imelda are already streaming northward, while patchy fog developed overnight in mountain valleys.
Imelda is forecast to remain offshore, turning east away from the Florida coast by late Tuesday before moving farther into the Atlantic as high pressure builds across the Carolinas.
For Asheville and surrounding areas, the forecast calls for a 20 percent chance of showers late Monday afternoon with highs in the mid-70s. Rain chances increase overnight into Tuesday, with scattered showers and storms possible through the afternoon. Temperatures are expected to remain a few degrees above normal, with highs in the mid-70s and lows around 60.
Conditions should gradually improve midweek. Sunshine is expected to return Wednesday and continue into the weekend, with highs near 72 to 79 and overnight lows dipping into the upper 40s to low 50s.
