ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Buncombe County is seeking residents to serve on a steering committee that will help shape the county’s first Pedestrian Plan, an effort aimed at improving walkability in unincorporated areas outside city limits.
The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners approved the formation of the committee on Oct. 7. Members will guide the planning process by reviewing public input, helping develop goals and recommendations and ensuring the final plan reflects the needs of local residents.
The Pedestrian Plan will focus on building a safer, more connected network of sidewalks, crosswalks and walking routes linking neighborhoods to schools, parks, job centers and other key destinations.
“Walking is one of the most accessible and sustainable forms of transportation,” county officials said in a statement. “This plan will help ensure residents in unincorporated areas have safe, convenient and comfortable options to walk where they need to go.”
The planning process began in summer 2025 and will continue through mid-2026, with opportunities for public input expected to begin this fall. The project is supported by federal funding through the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Residents interested in joining the steering committee can apply through the county’s website by Nov. 8.
