ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) —

A seasoned educator, coach and radio host has added a statewide media award to go with his football championship ring.

Charlie Metcalf, host of “The Wise Guys” show on WISE Sports Radio, was named the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association’s 2024 Media Person of the Year at an annual awards event Sunday, June 9, in Winston-Salem.

“It’s humbling to me. I’m proud to win it. I’m grateful to win it,” Metcalf said this week at the WISE studios in West Asheville. “It’s not like I have this huge background in soccer, but I’m interested in soccer people and giving them a voice.”

Metcalf, a 1972 graduate of Erwin High School, spent 30 years as a teacher and 40 years as a coach in football, golf and many other sports, including at Erwin, High Point Andrews, Rock Hill (S.C.) and Asheville high schools. He earned his ring with Asheville’s 3A State Championship football team in 2005.

In 2013 he began a long battle against cancer, and in the middle of that fight he also began contributing high school football analysis to

“The Wise Guys” show in 2017. It eventually led to hosting duties, which still keeps him busy with dozens of interviews each week highlighting a diverse array of local sports from across Western North Carolina.

Whether it’s soccer, football, baseball, golf, basketball or, you name it, Metcalf said “‘The Wise Guys’ tries to promote local sports with Western North Carolina flair to it, and we try to give a voice to all kind of people. And soccer is good in Western North Carolina.

They’re good coaches and they’re very accessible. They want to come on the radio and talk about their kids and the program.”
