CEDAR MOUNTAIN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Green River Preserve is a nonprofit, coeducational summer camp in Transylvania County that focuses on connecting children with nature and fostering environmental stewardship.
The camp is located on a 3,400-acre private wildlife preserve in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Camp officials say the setting is designed to help campers develop a deeper understanding of themselves, the natural world and one another through hands-on, outdoor experiences.
Green River Preserve serves children in rising first through ninth grades, offering one-, two- and three-week summer camp sessions. Enrollment is intentionally limited to 112 campers per session to maintain small group sizes and individualized instruction.
In addition to its traditional summer camp, the preserve offers expedition-style programs for older students. Base Camp Expeditions are six-day introductory programs for rising seventh through 10th graders, while Blue Ridge Expeditions range from 12 to 16 days for rising ninth through 12th graders. A Leadership in Training program is available for rising high school seniors and college freshmen.
During the spring and fall, Green River Preserve operates its School of Environmental Education, which provides three- to five-day residential outdoor education programs for school groups. The camp also hosts the Kids Agricultural Learning Experience at its on-site farm, offering spring programming focused on sustainable agriculture for local schools and organizations.
Campers and students explore forests, caves and streams across the preserve, where staff say daily activities are designed to encourage curiosity, environmental awareness and personal growth.
