ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Two crashes on Interstate 26 snarled traffic in opposite directions near Asheville during the Tuesday morning commute, according to state transportation officials.

In the eastbound lanes, a crash near Brevard Road closed the roadway about 2 miles past Exit 33 for N.C. 191 (Brevard Road), near mile marker 35 in Buncombe County. The closure began at 7:43 a.m., and officials estimated the road would reopen around 8:43 a.m. The impact on traffic was expected to be high.

In the westbound lanes, another crash near Long Shoals Road closed the left lane about 2 miles past Exit 37 for N.C. 146. One of two lanes was shut down beginning at 7:46 a.m., with reopening anticipated around 8:46 a.m. Traffic delays in that area were also expected to be significant.

Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes and expect heavy congestion in the area.
