ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Catcher Jason Schiavone has been named Minor League Player of the Month for April by the Houston Astros, the club announced.
Schiavone, who plays for the High-A Asheville Tourists, powered his way through the opening month of the season with nine home runs and three doubles, compiling a 1.050 OPS.
He has continued that pace into May, entering the week tied for second across Minor League Baseball with 11 home runs. Schiavone also ranks fifth in High-A with a .655 slugging percentage and eighth with a 1.055 OPS. In the South Atlantic League, he is tied for first with 27 RBIs and second with 25 walks.
Schiavone joined Asheville late last season, appearing in eight games after arriving on Aug. 25. He batted .286 with one home run and two doubles to close the 2025 campaign.
A native of Baltimore, Schiavone opened the 2026 season with Asheville and has shown increased power production compared with earlier stages of his career.
Asheville returns to action Tuesday at HomeTrust Park, opening a six-game series against the Rome Emperors. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
