ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Drivers traveling through Buncombe County should plan for an overnight closure of Interstate 26 westbound Wednesday as crews continue construction work.
The N.C. Department of Transportation said all westbound lanes of I-26 will be closed from Exit 40 at N.C. 280 (Airport Road) in Fletcher to mile marker 31.5, where Interstate 40 eastbound merges onto I-26 east just south of Asheville near the western end of Interstate 240.
The closure is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, and is expected to remain in place until 6 a.m. Thursday, July 16, weather permitting.
Motorists traveling from the Asheville Regional Airport, Fletcher, Mills River or Brevard toward Asheville should expect delays and follow posted detours. Drivers are encouraged to slow down in work zones and allow extra travel time.
NCDOT did not immediately provide additional details about the construction work or the detour route.
