ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Heavy rain moving through Western North Carolina is creating hazardous driving conditions Thursday, with reports of flooded roads and debris blocking at least one roadway.
The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg said much of the heaviest rainfall over the past 24 hours has fallen along the Interstate 40 corridor and across portions of the North Carolina mountains, with some locations receiving 4 to 6 inches or more of rain.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue moving across the region through Thursday and into the night, bringing the potential for additional rainfall and localized flooding.
Drivers are urged to use caution, avoid roads covered by water and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways.
Road hazards reported
A report of a tree and possible landslide blocking Joyce Kilmer Road in the Cheoah area of Graham County was reported Thursday morning.
In Canton, residents reported areas of standing water covering the roadway near Wells Funeral Home, urging drivers to slow down and use caution.
Additional road closures, flooding reports and hazards will be added as information becomes available.

- Turn around, don’t drown. Just a few inches of moving water can be dangerous.
- Avoid driving through water-covered roads when you cannot determine the depth.
- Watch for falling trees, mudslides and debris, especially in mountain areas.
- Allow extra travel time and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
