HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — As students adjust to back to school schedules, families with a student joining band or orchestra may have another assignment to tackle: finding the right instrument.
That’s a familiar routine at Tempo Music Center, a longtime music store at 244 N. Main St. in downtown Hendersonville. For 50 years, Tempo has helped families across Western North Carolina find instruments, arrange rentals and keep those instruments in playing condition.
For parents who don’t know a euphonium from a French horn, or aren’t quite sure what their child’s band or orchestra director is asking for, knowledgeable help can make that first trip to the music store considerably easier.
You might say the staff at Tempo speaks “kid” — and music.
A $5 way to get started in band or orchestra
This August and September, Tempo is pairing its back-to-school experience with several specials aimed at students and families.
For students who need a band or orchestra instrument, Tempo is offering the first two months of its rent-to-own program for $5 total, an $85 savings.
The rental also includes free repairs, which can be especially valuable once an instrument starts traveling between home, school, rehearsals and performances.
Renting can also give families an alternative to purchasing an instrument outright when a student is just beginning. That’s particularly useful when a child and the family isn’t yet sure whether the trumpet, clarinet or violin will become a long-term pursuit.
Tempo’s relationship with school music programs and experience with student instruments means families can get help understanding what they need rather than trying to navigate the process on their own.
More than student instrument rentals
While back-to-school season puts band and orchestra instruments in the spotlight, Tempo’s Main Street store serves musicians well beyond the school music room.
The store carries guitars, basses, band and orchestra instruments and other musical gear, including both new and used instruments. Tempo also offers instrument repair services, giving musicians a local place to turn when an instrument needs attention.
Guitar players have a back-to-school special of their own. During August and September, guitar string sets are buy one, get one at Tempo.
The store’s expertise extends beyond individual musicians, too. Tempo provides professional sound-system services and installation for spaces including churches, schools and auditoriums.
That range of services means the same downtown Hendersonville business can help a student get started on a first instrument, assist an experienced musician with a repair or help an organization improve the sound in a larger space.
50 years of making music in Hendersonville
Tempo Music Center’s Hendersonville roots stretch back five decades.
The business dates to 1975, when owner Michael Hall purchased what was then a record and stereo store. Over the years, Tempo evolved into a full-service music store serving generations of musicians, students and families.
Tempo has also been voted Best of Asheville three years running, adding regional recognition to its longstanding Hendersonville presence.
Having a local music store where families can ask questions, arrange a rental and return for repairs gives the community a resource beyond the initial transaction.
