ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Hurricane Helene is expected to bring a significant amount of rain and gusty winds to the Asheville area, and some local high schools are rescheduling Friday football games because of the forecast.
Owen will play at Mitchell at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Roberson will play at North Buncombe at 6 p.m. Thursday, Reynolds will play at Enka at 7 p.m. Friday and Erwin will play at Asheville at 7 p.m. Friday, a spokesperson for Buncombe County Schools said.
Haywood County Schools Assistant Superintendent Graham Haynes said district officials will be monitoring the weather before making a decision about the Tuscola vs. Franklin football game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“We, of course, want to make sure it’s safe to play,” Haynes said.
Pisgah is idle this week.
The Tuscola JV football game has been rescheduled to Wednesday night instead of Thursday.
A spokesperson for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association said decisions about games would be made by district officials.
By 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service had issued a Tropical Storm Watch for pretty much all of Western North Carolina. Counties in the watch area include
Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cherokee, Graham, Jackson, Rutherford, Haywood, Henderson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Swain, Transylvania and Yancey.
