HALLOWEENTOWN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Every day this month, resident horror movie enthusiast and 828newsNOW staff reporter Pruett Norris is recommending a Halloween film for your macabre amusement.
Whether they be monster movies or fearsome family films, demonic possessions or slasher sensations, this exercise hopes to encourage spooky seasonal “scream”ings at home or in cinemas.
As the old saying goes, “trick or treat, trick or treat, give me something good to…watch.”
Day 13: ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS (1979, 91 min., directed by Lucio Fulci)
The Italians have a long history with horror.
Filmmakers like Dario Argento and Mario Bava brought Italian horror films into the limelight during the 1960s and 70s with films like “Black Sunday,” “Suspiria,” and “Deep Red” forever changing the landscape of the genre. Later, films like Ruggero Deodato’s revolting 1980 found footage film “Cannibal Holocaust” would create an infamous reputation for the Italian brood of terror.
However, in the sweet spot of those cinematic landmarks is a little 1979 zombie film called “Zombie Flesh Eaters.” Or “Zombi 2.” Or simply “Zombie,” judging by the movie’s own title card. Despite the confusion over the film’s name, a result of re-release rights and international censorship, the movie knows exactly what it is: a gross, gruesome zombie extravaganza.
For audiences unaccustomed to the Italian brand of mid-century films, the dubbing in “Zombie Flesh Eaters” might be off-putting. The film stars Italian actors dubbed over in English, creating a sense of unease from the first frame, even if unintentionally.
It’s a testament to the film’s insane imagery that its effects need no translation.
“Zombie Flesh Eaters” is available to stream for free on Tubi and Pluto TV.
