HALLOWEENTOWN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Every day this month, resident horror movie enthusiast and 828newsNOW staff reporter Pruett Norris is recommending a Halloween film for your macabre amusement.
Whether they be monster movies or fearsome family films, demonic possessions or slasher sensations, this exercise hopes to encourage spooky seasonal “scream”ings at home or in cinemas.
As the old saying goes, “trick or treat, trick or treat, give me something good to…watch.”
Day 25: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975, 100 min., directed by Jim Sharman)
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” might be the strangest film millions of people can agree upon. The gonzo 1975 queer anthem musical became a cult classic upon its release and the cult has grown immeasurably over the ensuing 50 years.
For those unfamiliar with “Rocky Horror,” the musical chronicles the journey of newly-weds Janet and Brad after they wind up at the mansion of mad scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter, played with camp mastery by Tim Curry. It is hard to explain the rest of what transpires, except to say the film is exceptional in its transgression.
This is not a recommendation to watch “Rocky Horror” on your TV one night, or queued up on your laptop one morning. The film is best experienced in a format as over-the-top as its characters: live in a theater, complete with a performing shadow cast and an audience dedicated to “callouts,” or shouted responses to things in the film.
There are performances and screenings of “Rocky Horror” all over the country. To find one, just take a jump to the left and then a step to the right.
If you can’t track down a screening, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is available to stream on Hulu.
