HALLOWEENTOWN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Every day this month, resident horror movie enthusiast and 828newsNOW staff reporter Pruett Norris is recommending a Halloween film for your macabre amusement.
Whether they be monster movies or fearsome family films, demonic possessions or slasher sensations, this exercise hopes to encourage spooky seasonal “scream”ings at home or in cinemas.
As the old saying goes, “trick or treat, trick or treat, give me something good to…watch.”
Day 3: A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS (1987, 96 min., directed by Chuck Russell)
For the third day of Halloween, a threequel.
Maybe the best of the long-running “A Nightmare on Elm Street” series is its third installment, “Dream Warriors.”
“Dream Warriors” finds series veteran Heather Langenkamp working at a pediatric psych ward. There she finds that her young charges are under attack by Freddy Kreuger, the knife-handed dream-fiend Langenkamp’s character escaped in the first “Nightmare” film.
The kicker is that these kids can fight back.
In a mashup of a haunted asylum movie and “X-Men,” the titular dream warriors use their unique dream abilities to combat Kreuger’s killing spree, rendered in grossly comic practical effects. Kreuger is a giant snake, or has neon blue syringe needles for hands or is controlling a kid with his veins like a puppet master does a marionette.
It’s gnarly, campy 80s fun.
In the annals of bad horror franchise sequels, “Dream Warriors” is worth a shot — though not from Kreuger’s finger needles, if you can help it.
“A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors” is available to stream on Max.
