ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The city of Asheville has released a new report about the ongoing construction on Patton Avenue, a main artery to the heart of downtown Asheville.
The Carter Street – Ann Street – Patton Avenue Stormwater Improvement Project, also known as the Carter-Ann-Patton stormwater project, is an effort by the city to mitigate flooding in the area and improve its safety and accessibility.
New daytime road closures will begin on Jan. 10, limiting Patton Avenue to one lane in each direction. Drivers are encouraged to take I-240 or other detour routes to navigate downtown.
From 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Jan. 13 and 14, the stretch of Patton Avenue between Pearl Street and South Ann Street will be closed entirely. Detour signs will be posted at French Broad Avenue and Clingman Avenue.
The release from the city emphasized that “work will be carried out overnight to minimize disruption to area businesses and residents.”
The stormwater project, projected for completion in March 2025, will feature:
- ADA-accessible sidewalk upgrades
- High-visibility crosswalks
- Street resurfacing
- Historic-style lamp posts
- Urban-suited tree planting
- Pedestrian safety improvements at the Patton Avenue and Clingman Avenue intersection
