ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville Police Department is joining agencies across North Carolina in the “Speed a Little. Lose a Lot.” traffic safety campaign. The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program will run from Monday, March 30 to Sunday, April 5.
The program focuses on reducing crashes related to speeding, as well as improving road safety throughout Asheville. APD will increase their patrols around town during the duration of the campaign.
“As we head into the Easter holiday weekend, this serves as a reminder of the dangers of speeding and the potential consequences: the loss of a life. Speeding puts everyone at risk. Slow down, especially in neighborhoods and poor weather,” APD wrote in a press release.
“Over the last five years, speeding-related traffic fatalities in North Carolina increased by 22%, and the failure to reduce speed remains the biggest factor in motor vehicle collisions. In Asheville, last year, excessive speed was identified as a contributing circumstance in 25% of reported collisions, including one fatality.”
