ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — This week, local law enforcement agencies will join a statewide effort to educate motorists about North Carolina’s “Move Over Law.”
Beginning Monday, May 12 and extending to Monday, May 19, Asheville Police Department and Henderson County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the “Move Over or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
“This important initiative reminds drivers to slow down and move over for emergency responders and roadside crews with flashing lights,” HCSO wrote on social media.
The “Move Over Law,” (G. S. 20-157), requires motorists to either move over a lane or considerably slow down when encountering an emergency vehicle, roadside crew or police officer on the side of the road. Failure to do so can result in a $250 fine or potential criminal charges in instances of injury or property damage.
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, emergency vehicles include:
- Law enforcement
- Ambulances/fire trucks
- NCDOT safety patrol, or IMAP, trucks
- NCDOT trucks
- Highway contractors
- Tow trucks
- Utility trucks
Drive safe and move over. For more information, visit www.ncdot.gov.
