Area runners have two choices of events on Saturday, April 20, with the “She Slays 5K” from Pardee Cancer Center in Hendersonville and the “Haw Creek Hustle” at Charlie Bullman Park in Asheville.

* The She Slays 5K, sponsored by the Pardee Hospital Foundation and Hunter Subaru, will support women battling cancer through empowerment and fundraising.

It starts at 8 a.m. The 5K course, both for runners and walkers, will start and finish at the Pardee Cancer Center in Hendersonville, with a picturesque route through the community.

“She Slays was created to celebrate the strength and resilience of women battling cancer,” event organizers wrote. “By participating, you become a beacon of hope, a symbol of solidarity and a source of inspiration for those facing their toughest battles.”

People with loved ones who have, or currently are, battling cancer will honor their courage with commemorative yard signs placed along the course’s “Memory Mile.”

The first 350 registrants will receive commemorative medals, and prizes will be presented to the top finishers. As of last week, more than 200 participants had registered.

Callie Davis, Pardee’s Marketing and Communications Manager, said the event’s aim is “to empower women to take charge of their health and well-being while also raising funds for women in Western North Carolina with cancer.”

* The Haw Creek Hustle is a fundraising and community-building event for the Haw Creek Community Association (HCAA) in Asheville.

As organizers stated in an invitation, “This event is intended to bring the community together, not just to hustle, but also to socialize with neighbors, meet new friends, enjoy some fresh air and make lasting memories.”

It starts at 8 a.m. at Charlie Bullman Park, 719 New Haw Creek Road, Asheville.

The association is working with Glory Hound Events for registrations at the “Haw Creek Hustle” page: HERE.

All 5K runners will receive a custom race shirt and fun runners will receive a prize at the finish line. Water and light snacks will be available. Participants are encouraged to bring their own water bottles to fill in order to minimize the environmental impact.

An awards ceremony is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. near the finish area, with special prizes to the top three overall male and female competitors, and “top masters” (age 40-plus) finishers, male and female. Awards will be given in various age groups, including one for participants 12 and under.
