ASHEVILLE N.C. (828NewsNow) Here are updates from colleges and universities in the Asheville area. All schools remain without power, water, internet and electricity and have limited cellular service at the time of writing. The workability of Haywood Community College’s utilities is currently unknown. 

University of North Carolina – Asheville (UNCA): On the header of the University website, administrators wrote, “The University will remain in Condition 3 (Closure) until Monday, October 7, 2024. All classes are suspended until Wednesday, October 9, 2024.” 

“Although the University remains without power, water, cellular communications, and internet, students residing on campus are housed, have access to bottled water, and are receiving regular meals,” UNCA’s website states.  

Off-campus students are welcome to seek assistance on-campus. The University requests students bring their Rocky Card if possible. 

Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (AB-Tech): On the header of their website, administrators wrote, “A-B Tech will be closed until further notice due to the catastrophic impacts of Hurricane Helene.” 

A-B Tech is currently serving as two storm shelters, a “General Population Shelter” at 16 Fernihurst Dr, Asheville, NC 28801 and a “Medical Emergency Shelter for individuals who are dependent on medical equipment requiring power” at 10 Genevieve Cir, Asheville, NC 28801. Haywood Community College (HCC): On the header of their website, administrators wrote, “We intend to re-open on Monday, October 7 but will continue to share updates as we are able.” 

Montreat College: According to the College website, “This morning we are glad to report that all students have been safely relocated off campus following the recent flooding. At this time, we ask that all students and parents do not return to campus to retrieve vehicles or personal belongings until further notice.” 

The website also states, “there will be no classes or activities through at least Oct. 6.”

Warren Wilson College: Warren Wilson College’s president wrote in a letter on the website, “… the supply chain for water and food seems reliable.”  

The College is conducting wellness checks on students at the request of parents. “If you have not heard from you child since Friday, please fill out this form and we will work to provide an update.”
