ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) —
As the Fourth of July and its accompanying pyrotechnic celebrations approach, the Asheville Fire Department would like to caution residents to prioritize safety over spectacle.
“Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks, which include devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death,” said Public Information Officer Kelley Klope in a statement. “That’s why the Asheville Fire Department (AFD) recommends leaving the fireworks to the professionals.”
Fireworks that explode, leave the ground or otherwise fly are illegal according to the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code. Legal fireworks include sparklers, smoke devices, fountains, snakes, glowworms and poppers.
However, the AFD warns even these can pose a significant safety risk.
Instead, the AFD recommends trying “safe alternatives for a fun and patriotic celebration,” like an outdoor movie night, glow sticks in place of sparklers and silly string instead of serious fire hazards.
If residents do choose to celebrate Independence Day with legal fireworks this year, the AFD asks that these safety tips are followed:
- Always have a nearby water source.
- Never allow children to use lighters.
- Be mindful of pets who may get scared.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Use fireworks only in private settings.
- Remember, sky lanterns are illegal.
In case of fire, the AFD can be reached by phone at (828) 259-5636. In case of serious emergency, call 9-1-1.
