ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A juvenile was treated and released from the hospital after a shooting at a South Asheville apartment complex on Wednesday evening, following reports of an uptick in drive-by shooting incidents in the city in recent days.

The Asheville Police Department is not saying what led to Wednesday’s shooting, citing the ongoing investigation.

The shooting happened about 6 p.m. at Artisan at Biltmore Park apartments. According to a news release, officers found the juvenile victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg and applied a tourniquet until EMS arrived. The juvenile was transported to Mission Hospital where he was treated and released.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact APD at 828-252-1110. Anonymous tips may be submitted using the TIP2APD smartphone application (search “Asheville PD” in your app store) or by texting TIP2APD to 847411.

Wednesday’s shooting follows a spate of drive-by shootings last week in other parts of the city, including shots fired into unoccupied vehicles and one occupied apartment.

There was a shooting around 12:15 a.m. April 7 at the Pisgah View Apartment complex, where officers found two unoccupied vehicles had been struck by gunfire. About 4:11 a.m. that same day, police officers responded to a report of gunfire at the Deaverview Apartment complex. An unoccupied vehicle was also hit in that incident. Then, on April 8, officers responded to reports of gunshots at Pisgah View Apartments and discovered two vehicles and an apartment that were damaged by gunfire.

Police said no injuries were reported in those shootings.
So far in 2024, six people have been shot in Asheville and police have responded to 113 calls for service reporting shots fired or people being shot, APD spokesman Rick Rice said. In 2023, Asheville police officers responded to 471 calls for service reporting shots fired or someone being shot. Rice said 32 people were shot that year, including five who were killed.
