ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville Parks & Recreation has officially unveiled the grand opening of pool season.

Due to the effects of Hurricane Helene, the only community pool which will be open in the APR network this summer will be the outdoor pool at Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center, 285 Livingston St., which will open its doors for Memorial Day Weekend.

The Southside pool will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday before June 7, after which the pool will add weekday hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Admission to Southside, which includes the pool, a toddler play zone, changing rooms, bathrooms, picnic tables and a lounge deck, is $3 a day. Community members are also encouraged to sign up for swim lessons at www.ashevillecitypools.com.

However, Southside pool won’t be the only aquatic event coming to town this summer.

Splasheville

The popular downtown water pad Splasheville is already flowing with fun.

Splasheville is now open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily in Pack Square Park at 80 Court Plaza.

Foam Frenzy

Parks around town will be transformed into free-to-play foam landscapes from 1 to 3 p.m. on days throughout the summer.

  • Sunday, June 8 – Kenilworth Park

  • Tuesday, June 24 – Malvern Hills Park

  • Wednesday, July 23 – Jake Rusher Park

  • Sunday, August 10 – Montford Park

Summer Splash Days

An assortment of water-themed games and activities will be held free for all ages from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at parks and ballfields across the city.

Ageless Water Aerobics

From 10 to 10:50 a.m. on Saturdays from June 7 to August 16, Southside pool will host water aerobics classes free for community members aged 60 and up and $3 for adults aged 18 to 59.

“B.A.L.L. (Be Active Live Longer) gentle water aerobics incorporates effective strategies to improve cardio fitness, build strength, boost mood and ease joint pain,” said APR in a press release.

Toddler Sip and Splash

Once a month this summer, Thursday afternoons at the Southside pool will be set aside for parents and toddlers to experience water together.

The Toddler Sip and Splash activities will be held from 2 to 3 p.m., June 26, July 24 and August 28 for toddlers ages 2 to 5 with an accompanying adult.

The events are free, but advance registration is required.

Teen DJ Spin & Swim Pool Takeover

Teens aged 12 to 18 will get their own pool takeover from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, June 27 and Friday, July 25 at the Southside pool.

“Feel the club vibes at pool parties for local teens featuring food, music, and fun surprises,” said APR in a press release.

The takeovers are free to attend.

Toddler Beach Day Fun

Avery Montford Center will be transformed into a sandy playground for toddlers aged 2 to 5 and an accompanying adult from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 28 at 34 Pearson Drive.

Tickets are $2 and advance registration is required.

Splash of Colors

Toddlers are invited to come out with white tees to transform into colorful shirts in safely-colored water.

The free event will be held for toddlers aged 1 to 4 with an accompanying adult, Saturday, August 16 at Avery Montford Center.

River Snorkeling

APR is taking community members snorkeling.

“See mountain streams from a wild new perspective just under the surface. Wetsuit, wetsuit socks, snorkels and masks provided,” said APR in their release. “Wear shoes that can get wet and stay securely attached to feet.”

For $10, teens ages 11 to 17 accompanied by an adult, or for $20, adults ages 18 and up, can meet Saturday, August 23 and Friday, August 29 at Murphy-Oakley Center picnic shelter for van transportation to the river sites.
