ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Hiawassee Street between Rankin and North Lexington avenues has been temporarily repaved, restoring smoother access for motorists and pedestrians, Asheville officials said.

The temporary fix was necessary while planning continues for a permanent upgrade to the utility and stormwater systems.

City staff are actively coordinating with utility partners to finalize designs and ensure infrastructure improvements align with the upgraded stormwater system, city officials said. The road will be closed again for permanent stormwater construction, probably in winter 2026.

“We appreciate the community’s patience as we work toward long-term improvements,” Stormwater Division Manager Derek Wainscott said in a news release. “This temporary repaving ensures safe and accessible travel while we continue planning the next phase of utility coordination and infrastructure upgrades.”

The city will provide updates on construction timelines as they become available on the project page.
