ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting that occurred this weekend near the River Arts District.

Elijah Paul Foster, 32, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, as well as attempted first degree murder.

Officers responded to a report of a gunshot wound around 3:36 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 at an apartment complex on Atkinson Street, just a block away from Riverside Drive.

When officer arrived, they discovered and administered aid to a victim suffering a gunshot wound to the hip. The victim was transported to Mission Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Following an investigation, APD detectives determined that the victim was waiting at a nearby bus stop when Foster arrived, fired multiple rounds from a vehicle and fled the scene. Foster was in possession of a handgun upon his arrest.

Foster was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility under no bond.
