ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) – Beer is one of the oldest beverages on Earth. While often associated with unruly social gatherings, the drink’s potential health benefits might surprise you. Like most things in life, moderation is key when it comes to reaping the rewards of beer.

National Beer Day is on April 7. To celebrate, we laud the potential positive effects of drinking beer on the human body.

Nutrient-rich

Beer contains a wide range of vitamins and minerals that contribute to a balanced diet. It is a significant source of multiple B vitamins, including B2, B3, B4 and B9, according to Healthline. Additionally, beer contains minerals like magnesium and phosphorus, which both play important roles in bodily functions, such as bone and muscle growth.

Heart and brain health

Moderate beer consumption may have cardiovascular benefits. Drinking one beer per day, according to an international study, has been linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. The abstract explains, “This effect is similar to that of wine, at comparable alcohol amounts.” The refreshing beverage may keep your mind sharp longer too. The researchers expressed there is a “reduced risk of developing neurodegenerative disease” for those who drink one beer per day.

Improved digestion

Gut health is very important for healthy living. Fortunately, one of your favorite drinks offers a simple avenue to helping your internals. A scientific paper published by the National Institute of Health states, “Low or moderate beer consumption, with or without alcohol, showed positive effects on health by stimulating the development of a healthy microbiota.” Based on their findings, drinking a non-alcoholic beer had the same benefit for the biotics of the stomach.

Longer lifespan

People who drink a single beer or glass of wine per day are at a lower risk of dying in any way than those who do not drink at all. That may sound incorrect, but according to this study, it has been consistently proven. The researchers write, “Evidence consistently suggests a J-shaped relationship between alcohol consumption (including beer) and all-cause mortality, with lower risk for moderate alcohol consumers than for abstainers or heavy drinkers.”

Do not feel guilty celebrating National Beer Day. The health benefits are widely agreed upon. Remember to drink in moderation for the best results.
