HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) —

Phone scammers are back at it, this time spoofing the Hendersonville Police Department’s non-emergency number.

The police department has received several phone calls from residents about the scam, according to a post on its Facebook page.

“The scammers are generating these fraudulent calls using the police department’s non-emergency number (828-697-3025) to make it more believable,” the post said.

The scammers are using classic tactics like:

Claiming they work for the police department
Giving residents various fraudulent stories about their involvement in an alleged crime
Demanding payment in the form of gift cards or Bitcoin purchases

No law enforcement agency will ever call and ask for money or payment of any kind, especially when it involves resolving legal issues, police said.

If you have any concerns about the validity of a phone call, hang up and call the police department to confirm the allegations, even if the phone number shows up as a police department number.
