HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Several dead waterfowl were found at Osceola Lake earlier this month. One of them has tested positive for Avian Influenza H5N1, also known as bird flu.
This is the second instance of bird flu confirmed in the county following a dead cackling goose confirmed positive for the disease at Lake Julian in January.
According to a Henderson County Department of Public Health report, five birds were discovered deceased on Feb. 8 at Osceola Lake.
The health department has advised residents near Osceola Lake to avoid contact with birds, their feces and saliva.
While the risk of humans contracting the disease is low, “people should avoid contact with sick or dead animals, especially wild birds and poultry,” said the Department of Health in a news release. “Do not touch surfaces or materials contaminated with saliva, mucous, or animal feces from wild or domestic birds or other animals with confirmed or suspected virus infection.”
If a dead bird is encountered and needs to be disposed of, the health department recommends using gloves or a plastic bag to place the animal in the trash. Afterward, monitor for flu symptoms for 10 days. If symptoms develop, contact the health department at (828) 692-4223 for testing or tell your local healthcare provider you were in contact with a sick or dead bird.
If you suspect you have encountered a dead or deceased animal that may have bird flu, avoid contact and call the N.C. Wildlife Interaction Helpline at (866) 318-2401 for more guidance.
Concerned residents who wish to further monitor detection of the disease can visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture HPAI database.
