BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Black Mountain Police Department is urging residents to stay alert for a type of criminal activity known as “bank jugging,” a technique in which suspects target individuals after they withdraw money from an ATM.

While no incidents have been reported in Black Mountain, police said the crime has occurred in nearby areas, including Greenville, South Carolina, and Augusta, Georgia.

“Bank jugging” typically involves a suspect or suspects who watch victims at banks or ATMs, then follow them to rob them or break into their vehicles. Police said residents should remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity by calling 911.

Warning signs may include individuals sitting in parked cars watching ATMs, loitering near banks without a clear purpose or following someone who has just made a withdrawal.

Officials urge residents not to confront suspicious individuals. If something feels off, they recommend leaving the area and heading to a public place. Witnesses are encouraged to take note of identifying details such as vehicle descriptions, license plate numbers or clothing, and contact authorities immediately.

To help reduce the risk of becoming a target, police offer the following safety tips:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Be discreet when withdrawing cash.
  • Avoid displaying or counting money where others can see.
  • Park in well-lit, populated areas.
  • Avoid leaving valuables or weapons in your vehicle.

“Be safe, Black Mountain,” the department posted on social media Wednesday.
