BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC – October 2, 2024. (828NewsNow) As Black Mountain and surrounding areas continue to recover from catastrophic damage sustained since Friday, Sept. 27, portions of downtown Black Mountain regained power late yesterday evening. However, the majority of Black Mountain, Montreat, and Ridgecrest remain without electricity. Power restoration efforts are ongoing, with progress dependent on clearing debris and damaged power lines.
With power restored to sections of downtown, a number of local gas stations reopened today. However, shipments of fuel into the area remain limited and inconsistent. Residents are encouraged to conserve fuel whenever possible.
The Black Mountain Fire Department has conducted safety checks in most homes throughout Black Mountain, Montreat, and Ridgecrest to search for stranded residents. As power restoration continues, efforts are now shifting toward addressing fire risks in damaged properties.
Interstate 40 reopened yesterday afternoon in both directions between Ridgecrest and Old Fort, providing some relief for travelers. I-26 East remains open to South Carolina. To ensure public safety, the Black Mountain Police Department will limit access to exits off I-40, allowing only residents and support services, including donations, to enter the area due to ongoing storm hazards.
Residents in need of supplies can pick up food and drinking water daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Ingles, located at 550 NC-9. As shipments of supplies continue to arrive, hot meals will be provided starting at lunchtime today. Community organizations, including local churches, restaurants, and non-profit groups, are also distributing meals.
Public restrooms (port-a-johns) are available at the Visitor Center/Chamber of Commerce parking lot at 201 East State Street.
