ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) —

It’s been 13 years since Asheville Fire Department Capt. Jeff Bowen lost his life while battling an arson fire in a high-rise at 445 Biltmore Ave.

On July 28, 2011, Bowen, a 13-year veteran, ran out of air while working the fire in the medical building. He was 37. Several other firefighters were injured in the fire.

This year, the Bowen 13 workout will be held July 26-27 at NC Open Gym. There will be three rounds for time. Exercises include an 800-meter run, seven deadlifts (275/185), 10 burpee pull-ups, 14 single-arm kb thrusters (53/35) and 20 box jumps (24/20) with a 30-minute cap.

“This workout is meant to be tough to remind us of the ultimate sacrifice Captain Jeff Bowen made,” Asheville Fire Department said in a Facebook post. “Everyone is encouraged to participate, and you can scale the workout or attend as a participant to cheer each other on and to show your support.”
