BREVARD, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A Brevard man has been charged following a shooting in Pisgah National Forest on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office responded at about 2:40 p.m. Oct. 23 to the 3000 block of Pisgah Highway after reports of a shooting. Deputies learned the victim had already been transported to Transylvania Regional Hospital, where he is receiving treatment and is listed in stable condition.

Law enforcement detained a person of interest without incident shortly after arriving at the scene. Investigators determined that the suspect and victim knew each other and that the incident was isolated, posing no ongoing threat to the public, officials said.

Joshua Matthew Fortuner, 26, of Brevard, has been charged with two counts of second-degree kidnapping, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill — including one count inflicting serious injury — one count of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and one count of going armed to the terror of the public. He is being held at the Transylvania County Detention Center on a $400,000 bond.

Sheriff Chuck Owenby praised deputies for their rapid response and the investigative team for their thorough work. “We are committed to protecting our community and ensuring that visitors and residents alike remain safe,” he said.

The investigation remains active, and authorities have not released further details.
