Asheville, NC (828NewsNow) Due to the hazardous weather brought by Hurricane Helene, including catastrophic flooding, landslides, and high winds, Buncombe County Government is opening emergency shelters to ensure community safety.

In partnership with the Red Cross and AB Tech, Buncombe County has established two shelters at AB Tech’s Asheville Campus. These shelters are in addition to the existing emergency shelter at the WNC Agricultural Center, which has now reached capacity.

These shelters offer a safe haven for individuals displaced by the storm. All are welcome, regardless of race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or citizenship status.

Shelter Locations:

General Population Shelters:

  • AB Tech Conference Center: 16 Fernihurst Drive, Asheville, NC 28801 (Entrance via Victoria Road)
  • WNC Agricultural Center: 1301 Fanning Bridge Road, Fletcher, NC (Overnight Shelter)

Medical Emergency Shelter:

  • 10 Genevieve Circle, Asheville, NC 28801
This location is specifically for individuals who rely on medical equipment requiring power.

What to Bring:

  • Special items for children such as food/formula, diapers, extra clothing, and toys
  • Prescription medications and any medical devices you require
  • Comfort items like pillows, blankets, towels, and a change of clothing

Please note that, due to public health regulations, pets are not allowed in the AB Tech shelters. However, individuals needing shelter with pets should go to the WNC Agricultural Center.

The shelters are staffed by both Red Cross volunteers and Buncombe County employees. Additional resources, including transportation assistance, are expected to be available soon as the situation progresses.

Important Reminder: Please reserve 911 calls for life-threatening emergencies only.
