BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Buncombe County Fire Marshal’s Office has issued a temporary ban on open burning, effective Thursday, February 27 at 2 p.m., due to extreme fire danger conditions, including low humidity and strong winds.
The ban applies to all outdoor burning of yard waste, debris, and land-clearing materials. However, small fires in pits, barbecue grills, cooking fires, warming fires, and chimeneas or outdoor stoves under three feet in diameter are still permitted.
Officials said the ban will remain in effect until Wednesday, March 5, at 9 a.m., though it may be extended depending on conditions. The burning of any material other than naturally occurring vegetation is never allowed.
The ban does not apply to controlled burns permitted by the N.C. Forest Service that are attended and more than 150 feet from a structure. Residents with questions about permits or to report violations can contact the N.C. Forest Service at 828-667-5211 or 919-857-4801.
Burning is also prohibited within municipal city limits at all times.
