BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (828NewsNow) — The Buncombe County Register of Deeds has established a Family Assistance Center to help residents locate missing loved ones in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Over 11,000 requests have been submitted by people seeking to reconnect with family members and friends who have not been reached since the storm. The feeling of not knowing if a loved one is safe is haunting, and during this generational weather event, the Family Assistance Center is providing an invaluable resource to the community.
The Family Assistance Center is spearheading an effort to coordinate volunteers to conduct welfare checks on individuals who have not responded to multiple attempts to contact them. Of the 11,000 requests, 150 households have been identified as needing immediate welfare checks, particularly those with medical concerns. Volunteers are urgently needed to assist with these check-ins, as the center works to ensure the safety of those most at risk.
Volunteers should be familiar with the area, have a vehicle with plenty of gas, and carry a cell phone, though limited service is expected in some locations. The Family Assistance Center will provide names, addresses, and hardcopy maps to help volunteers locate those in need of a welfare check. Additionally, the center is accepting donations of water, nonperishable food, and other essential items that may save lives.
If you are interested in volunteering or donating supplies, you can stop by the Register of Deeds Office at 205 College St., Asheville. The office is open for volunteers and donations on from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More detailed instructions and orientation will be provided upon arrival, as communication systems remain unreliable in many areas. Volunteers are encouraged to arrive directly at the Register of Deeds Office for further guidance.
