ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Buncombe County commissioners approved a slate of measures at their July 15 meeting, including a major landfill expansion contract, updates on homeowner assistance and funding for senior services.

Commissioners authorized a contract with Buchanan and Sons Inc. for construction and demolition work on Phase 8 of the county landfill expansion. The project will add 4.7 acres for debris disposal and include road modifications, stormwater controls and erosion management.

The board also received an update on the Fiscal Year 2026 Homeowner Grant Program. The program offers financial assistance of up to $300 for eligible homeowners in unincorporated areas and up to $500 for those in Asheville to help offset housing-related expenses such as property taxes, mortgage payments or insurance. Applications for the program are now open.

In addition, commissioners approved the FY26 agreement with the Land of Sky Regional Council Area Agency on Aging to administer the Home and Community Care Block Grant. The $1.68 million allocation will support services for older adults, including Mountain Mobility, Meals on Wheels and in-home aide programs.

Other actions included signing a letter of support for the Healthy Opportunities Pilot program, urging continued state funding in the 2025–2027 budget. Commissioners also received an update on the Swannanoa Steering Committee, with applicant interviews scheduled for Aug. 5.

Proclamations were issued recognizing July as Parks & Recreation Month and Independent Retailer Month.
