CEDAR MOUNTAIN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — DuPont State Recreational Forest is an outdoor lover’s dream with about 12,500 acres of forests, trails, lakes and waterfalls.

Many of the area’s trails need repairs, though.

Beginning March 3, Burnt Mountain Trail will be closed to all visitors, the North Carolina Forest Service said in a statement.

“This closure is necessary in the interest of public safety while improvements are made to the entire trail. This scheduled work will improve trail sustainability, reduce erosion and protect water quality of nearby creeks and streams,” the statement said.

The trail is expected to be closed until April 30.

Last week, the Flat Rock Trail was closed because of chainsaw work in the area.

Because of the impacts from Hurricane Helene, the following trails and areas are closed and unavailable to visitors:

  • Barn Trail
  • Bridal Overlook Trail
  • Cart Trail
  • Flatwoods Trail
  • Grassy Creek Bridge – at the intersection of Buck Forest Road and Lake Imaging
  • Grassy Meadow Trail
  • Lake View Loop
  • Nooks Trail
  • Poplar Hill Loop – north half
  • Sandy Trail
  • Stone Mountain Trail – upper section
  • Table Rock Trail
  • Triple Falls Stairs
  • Triple Falls Trail

Visitors should expect to encounter changes to trail conditions such as increased erosion, uneven trail surfaces and narrowed trail treads. While DSRF staff have mitigated as many hazards as possible, visitors are advised to be cautious, allow extra time for their visit and plan alternative routes.
