FLETCHER, N.C. (828newsNOW) —

Here’s your chance to run alongside an active airport runway.

Registration is underway for the AVL Runway 5K, which is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at Asheville Regional Airport.

The race is billed as the flattest 5K in the mountains because, well, pilots typically like to take off, land and taxi on perfectly level surfaces.

For the event, 5K participants will run on Taxiway Bravo, beside active Runway 17-35.

The event was moved this year to the north side of the airfield so attendees would be closer to the taxiway and runway in the festival area.

The event also offers a morning with music and local food trucks (think coffee and pastries).

Fees through Aug. 6 are $35 with a short-sleeved race shirt guaranteed and $40 from Aug. 7 to 15 with a short-sleeved race shirt while supplies last. Walk-up registration Aug. 16 and 17 is $45 if some of the 1,000 spots still are available.

The race will be held, rain or shine. If unforeseen circumstances cause the race to be canceled, a new date will be chosen in spring 2025 and all registered participants will be notified. No refunds will be issued.
