WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Haywood County Board of Elections is reminding residents of upcoming deadlines for the 2025 municipal elections, with candidate filing now open for several local offices.
Filing began Monday, July 7, and will close at noon Friday, July 18. Seats up for election include the mayor and aldermen in Canton, town council members in Waynesville, and aldermen in Maggie Valley and Clyde.
To be eligible, candidates must be registered voters, at least 21 years old by Election Day on Nov. 4, 2025, and reside within the municipal boundaries of the office they are seeking.
A full list of candidates who have filed is available on the Haywood County Board of Elections website. As of this week, Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers has filed to seek another term.
