ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Southside United Neighborhood Association, in partnership with Asheville Parks & Recreation, has launched a communitywide survey to gather input on reimagining the historic pool area at Walton Street Park. The survey, open through May 31, aims to preserve the park’s historic character while incorporating modern amenities for future generations. Community members can access the survey on the “From Pool to Possibilities” project page.

Walton Street Park, established in 1939, holds deep historical significance, particularly for Asheville’s Black community. The pool and bathhouse, which opened in 1949, provided a vital recreational space during the era of government-mandated segregation. A 2016 assessment revealed significant infrastructure issues, prompting the city to expand the Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center to include a new outdoor pool following a community survey.

Recognized as a Local Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Walton Street Park is now the focus of an adaptive reuse initiative. This effort seeks to honor the park’s legacy while exploring new ways to revitalize the pool area for year-round use.

“We are committed to preserving the rich history of Walton Street Park while ensuring it remains a vital community asset,” APR Director D. Tyrell McGirt said in a news release. “This survey is a crucial step in Southside United’s community-driven process to determine the best way to honor its past and serve its future.”

The project is part of a community investment effort made possible by a general obligation (GO) bond referendum, which received overwhelming voter approval. The initiative is currently in the planning phase.

Opportunities for community input

  • Online survey: Open from March 31 to May 31 at publicinput.com/walton.
  • Spring Eggstravaganza: Community members can meet the steering committee at a Southside neighborhood festival and egg hunt from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 19 at the Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center.
  • Shiloh Fun Day: Another opportunity to engage with the steering committee will take place at a Shiloh neighborhood festival from 1-9 p.m. May 25 at the Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center.

The city of Asheville encourages all residents to participate in the survey and attend in-person events to share their vision for the future of Walton Street Park.

“We want to hear from everyone,” said steering committee member Shuvonda Harper. “Your input will directly influence the preservation of this cherished community space.”
