ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) —
A stretch of Interstate 40 West reopened Monday afternoon after a construction delay caused by issues with a batch of latex-modified concrete.
A busy stretch of Interstate 40 between Hendersonville Road and Interstate 26 between Exit 50 and Exit 46A had been closed over the weekend as an early phase of a $27.9 million interstate rehabilitation project began, with roadway resurfacing and bridge overlays, and other components.
The original plan was to complete the work and reopen the section by 6 a.m. Monday, but morning rush-hour traffic had to continue to find alternative routes.
According to a morning press release, before the section re-opened: “A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation encountered issues with the last batch of latex-modified concrete early Monday morning. This specialized concrete is used on bridge decks to protect the steel rebar inside. Without the proper mix, the concrete does not set correctly, and the mix is unable to safely sustain traffic.”
