ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Keep the winter gear handy. After a cold, windy day and night that could bring some treacherous travel conditions to the Asheville area, there’s more cold on the way and a Gulf low that could bring more moisture into the region by the end of the week.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will be well below normal for the next few days and increasing wind gusts are expected to bring dangerous wind chills in areas above 3,500 feet on Wednesday night. Minimum temperatures are expected to be around 10 degrees below normal. Locations above 3,500 feet or so across the northern mountains and above 4,500 feet across the southern and central mountains will likely see wind chill values dip to the 0 to -10 range.
Wind chills may dip into the teens nearly everywhere outside the mountains with single digits to near zero in the mountain valleys by daybreak Thursday.
The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, in anticipation of northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.
Areas under the advisory include Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Henderson, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Rutherford and Yancey counties.
A Wind Advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, for Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain and Transylvania counties, where northwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Monday for Burke, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford and Yancey counties.
The forecast for the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service:
Today: Showers likely, mainly before 8am. Patchy fog before 10am. Otherwise, cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 45. Breezy, with an east wind 5 to 10 mph becoming north northwest 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 38 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 19. Blustery, with a north northwest wind 18 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph.
Tuesday: Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 35. North northwest wind 10 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
Tuesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 16. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph.
Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 36. North northwest wind 7 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Wednesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 14.
Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 33.
