ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Officials and residents across the southeastern United States reported sightings of a bright fireball streaking through the sky late Thursday morning.
“Did anyone just see something fall out of the sky?” one person on the West Asheville Exchange Facebook page asked.
That person wasn’t alone. The National Weather Service in Charleston, South Carolina, said it received multiple reports of the celestial phenomenon, which appeared around 11:51 a.m. and lasted several minutes.
While the object has not been confirmed, satellite-based lightning detection systems showed a visible streak in clear skies near the North Carolina-Virginia border, specifically over Gasburg, Virginia, between 11:51 a.m. and 11:56 a.m., the agency said.
Authorities said no lightning was detected at the time, supporting speculation that the event may have been a meteor. There were no reports of damage.
