ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Timed to the celebration of Veterans Day, a documentary about a North Carolina dance company’s work with veterans will make its Asheville premiere at the Wortham Center of the Performing Arts.

The film, “We Lift Each Other,” was directed by Lou Pepe and Keith Fulton as part of their five-part anthology series, “I Feel Myself to Be Part of Something.” The documentary was produced in part by Tony Award winner Mara Isaacs.

“We Lift Each Other” will debut at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 10 at the Wortham Center, 18 Biltmore Ave. Tickets for the event are free.

The premiere will be followed by a screening at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Dancing with the veterans

“We Lift Each Other” chronicles the artistic partnership between Black Box Dance Theatre, an N.C. modern dance company, and veterans from organizations like Brothers & Sisters Like These and the Buncombe County Veterans Treatment Court.

The documentary depicts the ways that dance and creativity have assisted the veterans in their recoveries from PTSD, addiction and other wounds of military service, both visible and invisible.

According to a press release, the film “documents Black Box Dance Theatre’s work with veterans, giving them the courage to step into a creative process that fosters trust, healing and resilience.”

The films of “I Feel Myself to Be Part of Something” each explore the impact of the arts in five different communities across the United States. The first, “The Feeling of Home,” centered around a bipartisan music festival in White Sulphur Springs, Montana, while three forthcoming installments will follow an after-school arts program in Española, New Mexico, a muralist in Oakland, California and a theater company’s work in the South Side of Chicago.
