ARDEN, N.C. — A community favorite for dogs and their humans is back this weekend as Dog Day Afternoon returns to Lake Julian Park on Saturday, September 13, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. The free event promises an afternoon of canine-friendly fun, including high-flying stunt shows, costume contests, local rescue dogs, food trucks, and a brand-new fenced play area just for pups.

Dog Day Afternoon continues to bring together pet owners, families, and animal advocates for an event that celebrates dogs of all shapes and sizes. This year, organizers debuted an off leash play area with designated spaces for large and small dogs.

“You can enjoy the fenced-in doggie play area with your own dog or while meeting an adoptable dog at Lake Julian,” said Carrie Griffin, event coordinator for Dog Day Afternoon. “It’s an awesome new experience, and we’re excited to see the dogs enjoy it.”

From treats to tail wags, Dog Day Afternoon brings smiles to dogs and their humans at Lake Julian Park.

Attendees can experience Canines in the Clouds, a rescue dog stunt team known for its acrobatic leaps, obstacle course agility, and crowd-pleasing tricks. Their performance showcases the abilities of once-shelter dogs who now tour the country, entertaining families and inspiring adoption.

Several local rescue groups will be on site with adoptable dogs, including Asheville Humane Society, Mountain Pet Rescue, Rusty’s Legacy, and Foothills Humane Society. Event-goers hoping to give a dog a forever home are encouraged to stop by the rescue tents, meet available pets, and learn about adoption options.

Attendees can take part in fun pet-themed contests like the Best Dressed Dog and the Pet and Owner Lookalike Contest. Sign-ups for both will be available on-site during the event, and costumes are encouraged.

Dog Day Afternoon also features dozens of local vendors and organizations offering products, services, and giveaways.

Hollywood Feed will host a giveaway for a pet gift basket valued at $100 and offer free treats and their ever-popular pup cup bar for dogs. Best Buy Metals is raffling off a custom metal doghouse, with all donations from the drawing going to the rescue group with the fewest dog adoptions by the end of the event. Entry is free, but donations are encouraged to support the cause.

Food will be available with Woof Street Bistro and Sweet Squeeze Lemonade set to serve up local bites and refreshments.

Parking is available inside Lake Julian Park with overflow parking in the gravel lot near Wild Wing Cafe, with a short trail leading to the event area.

Dog Day Afternoon is free to attend and open to all ages. Whether you’re hoping to adopt, spoil your pup, or just enjoy the company of fellow dog lovers, the event offers something for everyone—especially the four-legged attendees.
