ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Local families and their four-legged companions are invited to a tail-wagging good time Saturday, May 3, as Dog Day Afternoon returns to Lake Julian Park in Arden. The free community event, presented by South Asheville Vet Emergency and Specialty, promises an afternoon of canine fun, food and festivities from noon to 3 p.m.
Dog lovers can expect a variety of activities, including dog contests, live rescue dog performances and opportunities to adopt pets from local animal rescue groups. Contest categories include Best Dressed Dog and Pet and Owner Lookalike, with sign-ups available on-site. Attendees are encouraged to bring their dogs on a leash and come in costume to join in the fun.
A highlight of the day will be performances from Canines in the Clouds, an entertaining stunt show featuring rescue dogs showcasing their athletic talents. For those looking to add a new furry friend to the family, several local animal rescue groups will be on-site with adoptable dogs, including Asheville Humane Society, Mountain Pet Rescue, Rusty’s Legacy, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Sarge’s Pet Rescue and Foothills Humane Society.
Food lovers won’t go hungry with Woof Street Bistro and Sweet Squeeze Lemonade food trucks serving up delicious bites. The park will also host pet-themed booths featuring treats, training tips, products, and pet care services.
Parking is available inside Lake Julian Park and at the gravel lot near Wild Wing Cafe. A short walking trail connects the off-site lot to the park. Carpooling is encouraged because of limited space.
