ASHEVILLE, N.C (828newsNOW) —
The Buncombe County Schools Board of Education has a new member.
During a meeting Thursday, the board voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Glenda Weinert to the at-large seat left vacant on May 15, 2024, when Amanda Simpkins resigned for personal reasons.
Some 27 people expressed interest in filling the vacancy. On Thursday, the board whittled that number to three — Osundu McPeters, Charles Martin and Weinart.
“I’ve known her for many years. I know her heart and her heart is with children,” said Kim Plemmons, who nominated Weinert.

Weinert, whose term will end Nov. 30, is a local business owner who has also served as an adjunct professor for UNC Asheville, Asheville–Buncombe Technical Community College and Lee University, the school district said in a news release.
Weinert will be sworn in in the coming days and her first board meeting is expected to be the special called meeting set for June 27.
