ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Officials are warning of elevated fire danger across Western North Carolina and the Upstate as dry conditions, gusty winds and low humidity increase the risk of rapidly spreading fires.
The North Carolina Forest Service said fire danger remains high, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours, when fires can ignite quickly and spread rapidly. Spot fires are also a concern under current conditions.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, officials said, urging residents to monitor conditions and check local alerts before doing any activity that could spark a fire.
The National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg issued a Fire Danger Statement for Monday afternoon across the North Carolina Piedmont and Upstate South Carolina, citing low humidity and gusty winds.
Forecasters said dry brush and leaf litter have become increasingly flammable in recent days because of breezy conditions and limited moisture. Those conditions are expected to persist.
A strong cold front moved through the region Monday morning, bringing gusty north winds and ushering in very dry air behind it. While a few brief showers are possible along the Tennessee border, most areas are expected to remain dry.
High temperatures are forecast to reach the 80s in parts of the region Monday before cooler air settles in Tuesday. Despite the drop in temperatures, low humidity levels could keep fire danger elevated.
Looking ahead, forecasters say cooler-than-normal temperatures could linger into midweek, with a gradual warming trend expected by Thursday. Another cold front is expected to move through the area Friday, bringing a chance of showers and potentially cooler conditions into next weekend.
In Asheville, Monday’s forecast includes a slight chance of morning rain followed by clearing skies and a high near 62 degrees, with wind gusts up to 30 mph. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-30s.
Conditions will remain mostly dry through midweek, with highs climbing back into the upper 70s by Thursday. A 30% chance of rain returns to the forecast Friday afternoon.
