Investigators determined that “smoking while using medical oxygen” was the likely cause of a mobile home fire on Wednesday, March 6, that resulted in the death of a 74-year-old Candler resident, the Buncombe County Fire Marshal’s Office reported.

The fire was reported at 7:36 a.m. at 103 Propst Road in Candler, with possible occupants inside. Fire crews reportedly arrived at 7:47 a.m., with heavy smoke visible. After entering the home through a window they located and removed a woman who was found to be deceased.

The fire marshal and Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office detective squad investigated.

“We can now say within a reasonable degree of scientific certainty, the fire was a result of smoking while using medical oxygen,” Fire Marshal Kevin Tipton said in a release. “The victim had mobility issues from existing health conditions, making it difficult to escape the smoke-filled and burning home.”

The victim was identified as Margaret Johnson, 74, a resident of the home.

The fire marshal expressed condolences to her friends and family.

“This loss is a reminder that no open flames should ever be used around medical oxygen to prevent further tragedy and loss of life,” Tipton said. “Never smoke in a home with medical oxygen.”
