FLAT ROCK, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Flat Rock Playhouse has built a national reputation as one of the country’s last true producing theaters, creating each of its productions from the ground up with artists and craftspeople who travel from across the United States to work in Western North Carolina.
Unlike touring venues, every show at the Playhouse is developed specifically for its Flat Rock stages, with sets, costumes, lighting, sound and props designed and constructed in-house. The approach allows each production to be uniquely tailored to the local community and its audiences.
The Playhouse presents an 11-month season that includes Broadway-style musicals, comedies, dramas, family productions, concerts and special events. Its educational mission continues through programs such as Playhouse Jr. and a nationally recognized apprenticeship program that trains emerging performers and technicians.
More than 100,000 patrons, students and community businesses visit Flat Rock Playhouse annually, making it a significant cultural and economic contributor to the region.
Founded in 1937, the theater traces its roots to a group of struggling performers led by Robroy Farquhar, who organized themselves as the Vagabond Players. After performing in various locations, the group arrived in Western North Carolina in 1940 and staged its first summer season in a converted 150-year-old grist mill at Highland Lake, known as the Old Mill Playhouse.
The initial success prompted a return engagement in 1941. Following World War II, the Vagabond Players reorganized and opened the Lake Summit Playhouse, which flourished during the postwar years. Seeking a permanent home, the group and a newly formed board of directors purchased an eight-acre site in the Village of Flat Rock in 1952. Performances were initially staged under a rented big top, marking the beginning of what would become Flat Rock Playhouse.
In 1961, the North Carolina General Assembly officially designated Flat Rock Playhouse as the State Theatre of North Carolina. What began as a short summer season has grown into a nine-month calendar of performances, including professional productions and theater for young audiences.
The Playhouse’s dual mission focuses on producing professional theater and providing education in the performing arts. Its offerings include a professional series, college apprentice and internship programs, and year-round classes and workshops for students ranging from kindergarten through adulthood.
Flat Rock Playhouse has also formalized a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, stating that it seeks to foster a welcoming environment for artists, patrons, volunteers and students of all backgrounds. The organization emphasizes storytelling that reflects the diversity of the human experience.
