(828newsNOW) — Former U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn is under new national scrutiny after social media postings and published reports linking him to a crash involving a Florida Highway Patrol vehicle on Monday, April 15.
The highway patrol is not identifying Cawthorn specifically, but has confirmed that a person matching the description of the former congressman for North Carolina’s 11th District was cited for violating the Move Over Law after the crash on Interstate 75 in Collier County, Fla.
The case has drawn national attention since a social media user named Alethea@Women2Dc shared a video of the wreck’s aftermath on X, formerly known as Twitter, and TikTok.
According to her posts, a black sports car was tailgating her vehicle on Interstate 75 south toward Miami. She said in her posts she passed a tractor-trailer and then moved to the right lane to let the black car pass. She said about five minutes later traffic stopped.
She pulled to the side of the road to avoid being hit. According to her posts, the black car appeared to have crashed into the back of a trooper’s car. She said she saw a man in a wheelchair exit the car. While driving around that car, he saw a trooper holding his neck while exiting his vehicle. Both vehicles were in the left lane.
Alethea@Women2Dc said in her post she recognized Cawthorn as the man in the black car.
However, a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol would not confirm the driver’s identity.
“We can confirm that on April 15, 2024, at 16:30 hours, an FHP State Trooper vehicle (Dodge Charger) was rear ended on Interstate 75, at mile marker 60, in a construction zone, in Collier County, by a 2021 Mercedes, driven by a 28-year-old male from Cape Coral, Florida,” Lt. Gregory S. Bueno said via email.
Bueno said the trooper, who sustained minor injuries, was transported to an area hospital and has since been released.
Bueno confirmed the driver of the Mercedes was cited for a violation of the Move Over Law. But crash reports with more information typically take about 10 days to post.
Cawthorn moved to Coral Springs, Florida, after losing to Chuck Edwards in a 2022 primary.
